Satoshi Nakamoto, Buterin, and Larsen/McCaleb: Who are the Intriguing Inventors Behind the World’s Top-3 Cryptocurrencies?

1.  Satoshi Nakamoto (Bitcoin)


Till date, the true identity of the creator of Bitcoin remains unknown to the public apart from the name presented as the author of the project’s whitepaper, Satoshi Nakamoto.

Other information that was claimed said he was born on 5 April  1975 and of Japanese nationality.

Over the years, there have been multiple claims by Australian entrepreneur and Chief scientist of NChain, Craig Wright that he is the actual Satoshi Nakamoto, inventor of Bitcoin. This claim has been disregarded by the majority in the industry though, as it is still believed that Bitcoin’s real inventor is still unknown.

2.  Vitalik Buterin (Ethereum)


Ethereum’s journey into existence began in 2013, and the major brain behind it is Russian – Canadian researcher and programmer, Vitalik Buterin, who was just 19 years old at the time.

Buterin’s journey into computer programming began at a very early age when he was singled out as specially gifted after his teachers observed certain abilities that put him above his peers, especially in the area of mathematics.

Vitalik has been involved in the Bitcoin community since 2011, and he co-founded and wrote articles for Bitcoin magazine.

Vitalik and his team carried out an online crowdsale for the Ethereum project between July and August 2014 and the project was eventually launched on 30 July 2015.

Ever since, a lot has happened to Vitalik’s brainchild as it has undergone attacks, forks, price swings and a lot more activities that characterise a typical blockchain product.

3.  Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb (Ripple – XRP) ripple

Ripple (XRP) is actually a product of Ripple Labs and came into existence in 2014 as a payment solutions software. Chris Larsen for his role in the project is the co-founder of Ripple Labs. Beyond Ripple Labs, Larsen is a renowned business executive and angel investor who is involved in several silicon valley startups. Larsen is an American and was born in 1960.

Jed McCaleb originally conceived the idea of Ripple, and was joined by a few other developers to build the payment network. They include, Arthur Britto, David Schwartz and  Ryan Fugge. The cryptocurrency is focused on building a system that can be efficiently integrated with existing banking payment systems on a global level.

McCaleb was born in 1975, and also a citizen of the United States of America.
